Correction

In our recently published short report discussing `Molecular evidence of Rickettsia felis infection in dogs from Northern Territory, Australia¿ (Hii et al. Parasit Vectors 2011, 4: 198), the sterilization programme being performed on indigenous community dogs was mistakenly stated to be facilitated by the Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC) organisation in the indigenous community of Maningrida, Northern Territory (NT).

This sterilization programme was instead undertaken by a private veterinarian, Dr. Ted Donelan, who is also the president of AMRRIC. The relevant sentence should therefore have read ¿Blood samples were collected from 130 dogs undergoing sterilisation procedures as part of the Dog Health Program conducted by a veterinarian, Dr. Ted Donelan in the indigenous community of Maningrida, NT.¿.

We apologize for the error and any confusion this may have caused.

In Figure 1 (The predicted distribution map of An. darlingi) and also in the An. darlingi map shown in the Additional file 2 (The predicted distribution maps of the nine dominant vector species of the Americas), points are shown on the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. These are confirmed absence points and therefore should not have been included. The maps are intended to indicate locations only where the species presence has been confirmed. Anopheles darlingi has never been found or reported from Costa Rica or Nicaragua (as indicated in the Expert opinion map) despite numerous and comprehensive surveys in the area trying to locate it.

Copies of the corrected figure and the updated Additional file 2 are available on the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) website:

Additional File 2 (all species maps):
http://www.map.ox.ac.uk/media/PDF/Sinka%20et%20al_Additional%20file%202%20-%20final%20maps%20(FINAL).pdf

Figure 1:
http://www.map.ox.ac.uk/media/PDF/Figure%201%20-%20An%20darlingi%20-%20corrected.png

I lived in Kwangju a few years ago. Early in the mornings when the weather was good, at least the area I lived in was often sprayed with a chemical to kill mosquitos. It would be my guess that this spray was not used or used less extensively in the "more rural" areas. This spray would have an effect on the mosquito population and therefore reduce diseases spread by mosquitos in urban Kwangju. Maybe these sprays also reduce the tick population and therefore tick-related diseases as well. Has this been looked into? What do you think?
